care to play along?...for me, I know I'm a photographer when I write a note to remember things, then take a picture of the note...because I know that I am definately going to upload photos from pic to computer and view them each day, hence I will see the reminder note...Now...other than the obvious, like taking pictures...what would you say to this...You know your a photographer when...
I adapted a handbag so that I could carry my camera everywhere with me, I get asked have you got it with you and I need a new profile pic for Facebook lol
@asrai I have been losing myself more and more in movies and tv shows wondering about settings and how I could get it to look like that or what they did to achieve it ....I caught myself wondering just how much cross processing I would have to do to make my shot look like one on tv! I have no idea what they were advertising.
When you are walking, driving, or talking to friends and insists on reaching for the camera, just to get a "quick" snap and then end up stopping where you are, going back a few feet because it really is the best angle.
It takes you twice as long on a hike as the other people you are with and when they come to look for you, they find you laying in the wet dirt on your belly trying to get the shot.
You see wonderful photographs everywhere you go and get highly irritated when you cannont stop right then and get the shot or you do stop and you are late for work
@mariboo oh no!! hope you feel better soon! I know what you mean about the picture taking, I was sick and had to get my shot for the day so I stacked up my medication and took a picture =)
...your baby has pulled his diaper off and is running around naked, you just KNOW he's going to pee on the brand new wooden floor any minute, yet you still decide to run for the camera instead.... Oh yes, that was me just yesterday!!! Got some awesome pics too!
you go out in the dark, go out in the rain & snow, love the fog, tromp through bushes and fields, wait for lightning (I wish), you look at everything differently, and lately for me, not being happy with auto-focus!
Your printer isn't working so you take a photo of the map with directions from Google Maps. Because you'll have your camera with you anyway, and then you realize that it's nice how you can zoom in on sections with your camera viewer to see details better.
When you go somewhere just to take photos, and everyone is like, oh we should be doing this...but you just want to watch. I went to Blackpool on Friday night, I took a DSLR, a super zoom, a film SLR and my camera phone. overkill.
Your having a bad day and taking pictures makes you feel better and turns your day around!!! Photography has become an outlet for me and a way of expression! Also when you are leaving the house and do the wallet, phone, keys, camera CHECK ready to go..lol!! I never go anywhere with out my camera
@chewyteeth I have to agree with you too....when taking pictures of what is going on is just as much fun as participating. My friends are always like your never in the photos and I tell them its cause I like taking the pictures and enjoying find those cool shots!! ( I do like my picture being taking)
All of these comments are so true...... and for me its taking shots of spiders which freak me out.... and attempting macro shots of wasps, bees and craziest of all trying to get a macro of a wasps nest......needlessly to say that failed miserably as they started to get a little bit feisty and I ended up getting away very quickly.... lol!!!
@kiwichick - Ha ha!!! That's me in our home with our kids!!! Just yesterday I needed to feed my 14 month old, but it had to wait 2 mins while I grabbed my camera to head out into the back yard to get a shot of the sun through the trees!! Then my 7yr old say the same kind of thing to me - "Mom don't you think you should get a picture of that, you know you'll regret it...." !
Not just admiring the bokeh/way a tv/film has been filmed and but also wishing you had been able to be on teh set photographing the actors and scenery. I find this kicks in most for me when watching historical or fantasy films/programmes.
When suggesting to your partner somewhere to take the children he considers it and then declares "You just want to get the photos there!" and you really can't argue!
When you go out and buy something just to use it for a photo. My Wife says, "Why did you buy that?" I needed it for a photo. "And now what are you going to do with it?" It will make a good Christmas gift...LOL
you feel you are missing something when you don't have your camera or phone cam....you are sitting and relaxing with your baby and you see something that you know would make an amazing shot and it is killing you that you can't get to your camera fast enough.... you trail your kids around like a professinal paparrazi every moment they are awake:) you sleep, eat and breath photography and look at EVERYTHING in terms of how it would look in a photo:))
...you find yourself fascinated by some of the camera work on some TV programmes or commercials with interesting effects that you make a mental note to try out
...you have a sort of mental photoframe that you look at the world through
...you accidentally forget to pack your camera in your bag one morning and feel the loss of it all day
...you stare at posters on a railway station thinking "I'd have altered this and done that"
...you look at a view and mentally sum up how it would look in HDR...
On occasions, putting off: work, auto and house repairs, meals, housework, family, friends, pets, and sex. But it's more fun to combine these your camera!
When you can't leave the house without your camera and make you husband turn around and take you back home to pick up the camera when you forgot to take it afterall.
your taking a photo and someone is standing there looking at you like you have lost the plot, you show them the picture and they are confused as they didnt see the same thing as you
You are in the Urgent care with your son or the ER with your husband and you pull out the camera and ask the doctor to move so you can get the best shot...
@nikkers I have just had spinal surgery, and I asked the surgeon if he could take photos during the op. He did! I can't decide whether to upload the photos or not, as they are rather gory, but it is really cool to be able to see my spine and all the metalwork that has been put inside. Facebook removed the photos, so I don't know if I should...
@cally . go for it. I had surgery last Feb and wish I had of asked the doc for some photos.. if people dont like them they can just not look at them..
Hope you have a speedy recovery..
when you've just had a hole drilled in your head to relieve bleeding after a heamorage and ask for your camera so you can get a shot (my dad... not me!!!...)

You set up a tripod at a popular tourist destination and suddenly everyone within a 5 mile radius with a DSLR hands you their camera for a shot of them because you "know what you're doing"
You know you're obsessed, to the point of being totally mad, but you don't care.
You need to remain fit & supple not for health reasons but to get one's body up stairwells, mountains and tight spaces and awkward positions to get 'the' shot
Everything all day is 'finger-framed' to see if it will work as a photo
You're always critiquing movies, adverts, packaging, magazines with regard to their pics and layout
Your camera is a piece of jewellery. You wear it 24/7.
When your camera is never out of reach and even sits on your nightstand.
When you become aware that all around you are using clever words and acronyms they have just learned, like HDR, DOF and BOKEH, but not always in the way you understand them!.
You wake at 3 in the morning trying to think of what you're going to a snap of the next day (as you HAVE to post everyday).
You now drive like Miss Daisy in case you miss a photo op along the road.
The dogs see you with the camera and just lie down, knowing they're not going to get any attention.
You see everything in terms of f-stops, shutter speed and yes, thirds...
You watch TV and movies and think, wow, that would make a great pic...
When you've lost count of the number of people that have had to check you aren't injured, because you've been lying on the floor/pavement/grass/mud trying to get a good shot...
When I'm not taking a photo and i correct the person holding the camera cause he/she has no clue on lighting..... maybe its a bad habit, but i hate hearing "we came out to dark lets do it again" get it done right the first time.
When you are walking around the roughest parts of London with a camera and you hope to return home with your camera, plus you don't want to be accused of working on behalf of the police.

you loose track of what is happening in a movie because you are focusing intently on the amazing bokeh in the background
you spend the whole time at a firework display watching it through a viewfinder
you see everything in thirds
I was writing that my characters were having a picnic some months ago, and spelled it, "Picnik." Yikes.

when you get really irritated at signs saying "no photographs"
you've crawled on your belly to get a shot of an interesting plant/insect/small animal
when someone mentions chimping your first thought is not of a furry primate
You have learned to operate your camera with numb fingers during cold weather
You see wonderful photographs everywhere you go and get highly irritated when you cannont stop right then and get the shot or you do stop and you are late for work
Oh and I did this today :)

@kimmiesue and do we get to see this awesome shot?
@chewyteeth I have to agree with you too....when taking pictures of what is going on is just as much fun as participating. My friends are always like your never in the photos and I tell them its cause I like taking the pictures and enjoying find those cool shots!! ( I do like my picture being taking)
When you attend multiple family and friend functions, and are asked by the host to photograph the event.
When you're driving in the car and pull over just to take a picture of something random (like a sign, field, or a sunset)
When you have shoes in your closet specificially for the type of shooting conditions you may run into throughout the year.
When your battery blinks and you use every last drop of power just to get that perfect shot... and then you still run out of time.
When your 5 year old son tells you to pull over and take a photo... "you know you want to mum, just do it".
Your friends admire the view and you circle around them taking shots of them admiring the view!!!

Your cubicle at the office looks like a photo gallery, of your own work.
You trespass "for just a second" to avoid getting the fence in the frame.
When you go with your daughter for some outpatient surgery, are allowed in the room, and you take a pic of the surgeon working (see my posts for the shot called Surgeon's Hands - Oct 14)

Every time you stop the car your kids ask you what you are going to take a picture of. (they used to ask me where the geocache is).
