Eye Of The Beholder Challenge 3

February 19th, 2013
Thank you all for participating in the EOTB2 challenge and to AutomaticSlim for doing such a great job of hosting it. Hopefully you are all raring to go with challenge no. 3!

No need to reinvent the wheel; Jeff Walker devised this challenge and his original brief describes it perfectly:

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

For those of you that don't want to commit to a specific set of words for a month, are intimidated by the thought of being pushed by another 365'er, don't want to be constrained to a specific mundane object, aren't feeling the week's theme, feel you don't have the creativity, time or tools for album and wwyd challenges but still want to face down and conquer a challenge, I have just the challenge for YOU!

(Also, if you enjoy facing all the above challenges and can't get enough of challenges and want to add another challenge to your arsenal, this is for YOU as well!)

Here's the lowdown (and its fairly simple):

Your challenge is to find something most people would not consider to be beautiful, and find a way to capture it that IS beautiful, You can achieve it any way you desire. This challenge will help you with your composition and lighting skills. The way you compose the shot or the way you use light will usually be the way you bring out the beauty. It will also help you look at your surroundings differently. Everything is potentially a beautiful photograph. Its not a matter of finding something to photograph, its a matter of finding a way to photograph something that makes photographing it worthwhile.

There is not specific item you have to photograph for this challenge. And the only rule is that the subject you photograph has to be something that, if people were watching you photograph it, would be wondering what has possessed you to photograph something so plain, bland, boring, ugly, etc. Beauty is where you find it, and it is all around you. Train your eye to see things differently.

The challenge begins now and runs through to Thursday 28th February at midnight GMT. Entries must be taken within this timeframe.

Ready to get started? Tag your entries EOTB3

I will select and post the 5 images I feel best achieved the goal on the 1st March and voting will run from then until Sunday 3rd March at 9.00pm GMT.
The winner will be announced shortly thereafter and then that person will have the honour of selecting the 5 finalists for Eye of the Beholder 4.

Good luck!

There seems to have been a little confusion regarding how to enter your photos for the challenge. Just to clarify: you don't have to post your photos anywhere other than on your own page - your entries will automatically be entered when you add the tag eotb3 in the tag box on your page.

Great idea Linda, I must say I've been put off some of the others because I can't dedicate enough time to them but this sounds ideal for all sorts of people!

this is by far my favorite challenge - it's fascinating to see all the odd things people take pictures of, and then how wonderful those odd things really can be :-)

I LOVE ugly!

@deeganp @kilbane @twistergirl Yeah, I agree, Jeff Walker's EOTB idea is a great one. We are all surrounded by mundane stuff and it gets you thinking about how to try and make it look beautiful.

This is a favorite of mine as well! Here's my first entry: a pile of props at work (I work at a costume/theatrical shop).

@happysnap I'm confused, should we be posting our entries here? I just posted mine as my daily shot with the EOTB3 tag.

@twistergirl Hi Doris, that is right, you just post your daily shot as usual on your page and tag it with eotb3. It will then be entered in the challenge. Thanks, Linda
