Free, easy RAW editor needed, any advice?

March 6th, 2014
Can anyone advise Lee-Ann @leestevo on a good free RAW editor that is easy to use? She is starting out and finds many photo editors difficult to use. She asked me in the RAWCOMP forum, but I thought I'd pose this question to those of you with more experience in RAW editing and editing in general. Thanks for your help!

@leestevo

I believe there is a raw editor with he GIMP software. http://www.gimp.org/

@leestevo - I've not tried it but yes, supposed to be a RAW editor with GIMP, but I really wouldn't describe GIMP as an easy photo editor. I like it and use it, but explaining how I do things often gets reactions of confusion. It's a freeware version of Photoshop at an earlier stage.

@homeschoolmom There's a free raw editor called raw therapee. I haven't used it myself so I can not say how easy it is to use.

I use darktable, available for Linux

You can also use RawTherapee available for windows, mac and linux

They are both free and open source.

Which camera is @leestevo using? Does it not come with its own Raw editor (Canon have their DPP Professional software for example)?

@leestevo @homeschoolmom your camera is capable of taking RAW then it should come with a RAW processor such as DPP for Canon. I've never used Rawtherapee. I know that if you use GIMP, you can get a RAW plug in for it but again I have no experience.
If you are willing to look at cheap and not free, then Photoshop Elements contains a slightly cut down version of Adobe Camera RAW, and doesn't cost too much.

Photovio seems decent and is available for Windows / Mac / Linux : http://photivo.org/

Rawstudio is Linux only and really easy: http://rawstudio.org/

Rawtherapee is available for Windows / Mac / linux: http://rawtherapee.com/

Darktable is available for Mac & Linux. http://www.darktable.org/
It's feature complete and nice looking, but I found the UI controls to be too small and fiddly.

Rawtherapee is my go-to raw image editor. It may be a bit harder to use but I'm used to it now so I don't use anything else. I'd try one of the Adobe products if they did a Linux version - but that's not going to happen - ever.

@4umfreak "Rawtherapee is available for Windows / Mac / linux: http://rawtherapee.com/ - Rawtherapee is my go-to raw image editor."

I can see why - I just downloaded it out of interest, and apart from realising that you had to hit the enable button on the tools it is very similar to lightroom without the library products. If you want a freebee, I would highly recommend this. I've only played with it for 10 minutes but I am well impressed

The software with your camera could be a good choice to start with. Paul above @steampowered already said as much. If you don't have the disks any more, go to the manufacturer web site and find it there.

Thank you for your help and Lisa for posting this question for me. I am new to this and now learning to edit photos. Photography is a total new language for me.
The cameras i use is a Canon 1000D ( pretty old, but it does the job) and Olympus Tough. The cannon software cd i need to find as it was installed on my old computer which is gone now.
I will try some of the free raw editing programs that you all have suggested.
At the moment i use picmonkey & befunky editing programs as they are so easy to use...so thats why i posted the question to Lisa about very simple raw editing programs.
thank you so much you all have been great & helpful especially Lisa :-)

@leestevo You're welcome. Hope it helps you!

@leestevo As @leestevo you can download the software from the Canon website, but Rawtherapee is well worth a look too.

Actually, I've just spent a bit of time searching for the link for the software for the 1000d (the software that came with the camera), and can't find it - it used to be available but it doesn't seem to be anymore. Not sure if you can find it @frankhymus

@leestevo I found it - download it from here - I know it says it's for the 1100D but it is the same software. Then use the updater on the canon site to update it to the latest version:
