New Abstract Mundane Challenge - Thermometer.

March 15th, 2017
Thanks so much to Nicole (@nicolecampbell) for hosting the last Abstract Mundane challenge and for giving me a run down on how to do this!!

The subject for the both the new "Mundane Challenge" and the new "Abstract Mundane Challenge" is "Thermometer"

The difference between the two Mundane Challenges is quite simple.

An entry in the Mundane Challenge will be quite a plain image with the thermometer the “Star of the Show” It will normally involve little obvious editing.

In contrast, an entry in the Mundane Abstract Challenge may use shape, form, colour and line to create an image with a degree of independence from an actual thermometer. Producing your abstract image doesn't necessarily mean it becomes unrecognizable. Instead it may be presented in a reduced, simplified form - (editing fun!)- only showing its most important aspects.
A straight photo can also be purely abstract by only showing the viewer the most important parts of the topic with no distractions.
In a more complex abstract photograph, the subject may be hard to recognize, appearing as a series of design elements, or patterns, which only hint at the general structure.

All, or any, of these possibilities will be cheerfully accepted – as will any other options that you feel should be OK!!.

The Abstract Mundane Challenge starts March 16th and ends midnight GMT on Friday 31st March.

You may enter as many photos as you like, provided they are taken within the time frame of the challenge.

You must enter different images for the regular mundane and abstract mundane challenges. However, if you would like to develop your editing skills by forming an abstract image from your plain image that would be fine.

You are encouraged to post your entries on this thread to inspire others and keep this thread alive.

Please tag your entries: abstract-thermometer

5 Finalists will be chosen by considering ideas such as:

• Is the image related to the topic in some discernible way
• Does editing help the viewer to relate to the topic
• Does the image show originality and creativity
• Does the image have an overall impact related to the topic

Voting will take place on the 1st to 3rd April.

Have fun and good luck. Looking forward to seeing your abstract photos of this mundane object.! No longer so mundane!!

Cheers Rob Z

P.S. If you like to view the previous topics from this challenge please check on the Mundane Challenge page.

@marcy0414 @kathyboyles Wow - these are great - and at such short notice. Thank you for posting them. I really like this topic choice - there is such a range of types to play with.I wonder if you clarify something for me? In this challenge - having the two strands (mundane and abstract mundane) is there any clear cut way of differentiating which photos should be in which category? Is the abstract one allowing for more editing and creativity after the shot is taken?

Yay, you worked out my instructions and created the post. :)

@robz The mundane challenge is plain. The abstract challenge is abstract and may not even show an actual recognizable thermometer. The abstract challenge will be much more creative than the mundane challenge. In fact, it is usually called just the abstract challenge, not the abstract mundane challenge I think.

@nicolecampbell Yes - you're a good teacher!! Thanks again for the help. Hopefully the last steps will be OK too. Cheers

@kathyboyles So, an abstract response will not necessarily have any editing - it may just be an unedited photo with an abstract connection to a thermometer?
March 16th, 2017
@robz No, an abstract photo may be edited. There is a lot of software that makes a mundane photo become abstract. An abstract photo will almost always be edited. By the way, I was away for a while, about a year, and sometime during that time the name changed to the abstract mundane challenge, my apologies.

@kathyboyles
Thanks Kathy. All your ideas have helped greatly. I tried a couple of photos and I thought this one could be a test to see if I have the right idea: I thought this would basically be a "plain" because it mainly consists of the straight thermometer. Would the bit of editing to make the side sections pink ( as in warm) and the caption "heating up" be enough to classify it as "abstract" I guessed not? Promise to stop bothering you!
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers Rob
P.S. No worries about the name change.

@robz Rob, this would not be considered mundane and would be abstract. I think you should see what some others submit and you will see some great abstract thermometers.

@kathyboyles Thanks Kathy - will do. I'll have a look at both sets of entries!! I wasn't planning on doing anything with this one - just trying to get a grasp. Cheers Rob Z

@kathyboyles Hi Kathy - Have done some homework and think I have a better grasp now. @nicolecampbell Hi Nicole - I hope it's OK - I added a bit of a P.S. to the bottom of the intro outlining the ideas from Google research.I'm more than happy to remove them if you think they are not needed - or worse, are actually wrong. lol .At least I feel a little more informed and not so useless at choosing some finalists.

@robz - I think that is fine, have fun choosing the finalists.

@nicolecampbell Hi again Nicole - sorry to try your patience but I have a couple of more questions.

Is the theme always chosen by the Plain Mundane organizer.? If so could I streamline the Abstract entry by removing the list of previous items?

The wording says that the same image cannot be entered into both competitions. Does this mean that the first image (plain) cannot be edited and reduced to an abstract form for the second image (abstract)? Would it matter if newbies (such as me) played with their first image to have a go at the abstract challenge. It seems it may link the two sections more closely and give a bit of incentive to try editing programs.

Thanks for being so patient!!!
Cheers Rob Z

Yikes,what's this? It's an Ad!
Well, an announcement really! After much consultation with experienced 365ers a few exciting changes have been made to the Abstract Mundane challenge.
One interesting change is that entrants in the plain Mundane Challenge are now encouraged to use their original photo as a starting point, have some editing fun, and enter their modified (no longer so mundane!!) image in the Abstract Mundane Challenge.
