It's part of the floor in front of one of the pumping engines. Lester (my husband) thinks the metal inserts were to provide grip for engineers who might well have worn hobnail boots. We're not sure, however, so will ask aboout that next time we visit, but hobnails would certainly slide on stone flooring.
