Stad Amsterdam arrives in Cape Town

This afternoon VPRO Beagle's "Stad Amsterdam" arrived in Cape Town. She's a replica of HMS Beagle, the 3-mast clipper that Darwin spent 5 years sailing around the world in. This is her last stop after a year-long voyage with a team of scientists and broadcasters on board. I first saw her on Friday morning when she entered False Bay on the eastern side of Cape Town. She came in early in the morning, running with a near gale-force wind. Watching her being battered out at sea gave me an inkling of what it must have been like for the mariners of old. Today the wind had died down, and it was a perfect autumn afternoon. She came into the V&A Basin just after 4pm, and will be at Jetty 2 until 2 May. I chose this picture because I enjoy the contrast of the old, and the new - cranes, tug boats and clipper ships. They all have a place in a modern harbour. (If you'd like to see more pics of her, have a look at the photo album "My Home Town" on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/eleanor.muller)
oh wow, this is soooo stunning!

I hope there was a good turnout to receive the ship in port! I love seeing the Tall Ships when they come into Halifax NS...there's a real sense of history, boarding them and learning something about them as well. (I went to FB, but I'm not a member so couldn't see more, but I tried...)
