Whale watching. Watching what? by eleanor

Whale watching. Watching what?

Can you see the whale? No, it's not the black rock on the right hand side of the picture. That is a rock. It's the white splash in the middle. Can't see it? Well, in reality neither could the people standing at the side of the road near the Twelve Apostles Hotel this afternoon. All we saw were the occasional splashes as they surfaced, oh so briefly, to breathe. Given the size of the animals you see precious little. I've given up whale watching ... I prefer sea-watching. If a whale pops up, well gee, isn't that nice!
Great shot - they are hard to capture!

Great timing and a stunning sunset!

But such a beautiful picture! I had something similar happen last week on vacation - pods of dolphins yet all my camera captured was tiny blips in the water.

Love it...and the beautiful sunset.

You captured whale watching perfectly

Nice sunset picture even if you can not see the whale.

Great picture. And that sounds like a good motto just in case you dont see the whales, you are not let down.

wow--very peaceful and tranquil--with or without the whale...nice

so true about the whale watching! great capture though

I love your caption; your sense of humor really shines through! Indeed, I see the splash, but it pales by comparison to that sunset! The soft, low light really makes the picture...and we'll pretend there are some massive whales swimming by!

Still a pretty sky :)

I will call you when they are in False Bay and breaching so you can get a picture. Loved your photograph anyway. I think you captured the moment, and that is what is important. They don't seem to have arrived in False Bay yet.

Beautiful Eleanor!

very nice.
July 26th, 2010
A beautiful shot though. Your approach to whale watching sounds like my approach to fishing.

Hi Eleanor, have you checked out the official Top 20 this week- See Blog. I strongly suggest you do !!! if you have: Congratulations!

Have just read all the comments on the Blog and seen yours. Do 'they' notify you that youe photo is up? Totally deserved recognition. Only a fabulous photo would attract that much attention. I was so excited to see you there at the top of the list!

That looks like a beautiful day for sea-watching. :) Nice shot.

Beautiful sky and ocean!

I love the warm tones! I grew up on Cape Cod and never saw a single whale on any of the whale watching trips I took, so I can sympathize with your decision to sea-watch instead. ;-)

Time to throw the tripod into the car and head on down for a beer at Dixies?
July 26th, 2010
@Glynnis: Liz says there isn't much activity in False Bay yet. She says she'll call when they are there, and we can go down together. That will be great!

I saw the little bit of whale, but either way, that sunset is gorgeous!!
July 26th, 2010
Beautiful shot!
July 27th, 2010
I really thought that the rock was a whale:) But it´s somewhere there. But the view is gorgeous, with or without a whale.
July 27th, 2010
wow!
July 27th, 2010
Yes I see it, but like your sensible aproach after that item in the paper the other day. Where the whale breached and landed on top of a boat of whale watchers. Scary huh?
