South Africa has only three remaining horse-racing courses, one of which is a block away from where we live. The racing season is quite short - November to March; for the rest of the year the course is pretty much unused.
What makes this place so important to our community is the fact that it's a 52 hectre area with a large conservation area in the middle - home to the only remaining piece of Cape Flats Fynbos and the last remaining natural habitat of one of the Cape Micro Frogs. It's a green lung that is good for the neighbours.
I had a lovely walk around, looking for the angles and pictures - but there is nothing as endlessly boring as a racecourse in hibernation, a month before the season starts. My favourite moment was finding the reflections in the mirror at the finish line - a moment to participate in this week's "self portrait" theme.
