Fried Green Tomatoes

Anyone got a recipe I can try out? We are going to have masses of tomatoes this year!

Later comment: Karen's recipe is great, but they still ripen: here's the status in January: http://365project.org/eleanor/365/2011-01-04
YUM!!

Classic Fried Green Tomatoes

4 to 6 green tomatoes
salt and pepper
cornmeal
bacon grease or vegetable oil

Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them
to taste. Dip in meal and fry in hot grease or oil about 3 minutes or
until golden on bottom. Gently turn and fry the other side.

@chevymom Thank you. I had to check what cornmeal is, but now that I've discovered we call it mielie-meal I'm with you. Will report back!

No problem! I have also used Italian bread crumbs instead of the cornmeal. My tomatoes are long gone so eat one for me.

@chevymom I made Fried Green Tomatoes for breakfast (with bacon & egg) and they were yummy. I enjoyed the taste in comparison to cooked red tomatoes which are rather insipid. Thank you, Karen. Lovely new experience.
