Happy New Year, Mr Cassim by eleanor

Happy New Year, Mr Cassim

"MJ" Cassim has worked as a vendor at Newlands (cricket & rugby) for 47 years. He's one of the iconic characters of the sport spectator's scene. His voice arrives before you see him - welcoming the spectators and shaking hands with those he recognises. His repertoire of jokes is very "Cape" and parried with typical local wit.

Chatting at the SA vs India cricket test he told us proudly how he has photos of himself with all the famous South African sportsmen, and carefully recounts the successes of his four children who are in management positions in retail or professionals. He's such a character that a local business sponsors him with specially embroidered clothing and a monthly salary.

There is a great deal to be said for consistancy.
What a fantastic portrait! He sounds like such an interesting person. I feel like people like him are such an important part of the live sporting experience.

What a treasure. I would offer a print to his family, and perhaps the stadium.
