How the mighty have fallen

This is an APC (armoured people carrier) called the Casspir, designed for the South African Police and used to move police in and out of areas where people were rioting. It's also one of the greatest symbols of oppression of our turbulent past.

So I nearly drove off the road when I discovered two of these vehicles, apparently abandoned, and being overgrown by nasturtiums, in the leafy suburb of Wynberg. They are on a disused property that looks as if it was a garage for the police (afterwards I worked out that its close to the Wynberg Courts).

Such a waste. Why not convert them into game drive vehicles? They have stunning 4WD capabilities, and with their high clearance and a little refitting, could be great for spotting animals in the bush!
What a find, and right on my doorstep! I must take my boys past there and broaden their knowledge a bit about those days. Very interesting capture.

@deens They are in Cavern Road, Wynberg - just below the Wynberg Schools. Look carefully and you will see the gate isn't locked. The one has open doors - you can climb right into the back.

good spotting, nicely composed; they should follow your suggestion and restore it and use for a better purpose

Interesting find. Hard to understand why these vehicles are just abandoned there.

Sjoo - I did see one of these roaming the streets the other day. I wonder if they are still used?
