During this 'quiet' time of the year the debate raging in South Africa is whether big-corporate retailer Woolworths have ripped off small-entrepreneur Frankie's products.
In essence, Woolworths have produced a range of house-brand drinks that replicate Frankie's entire business - olde world theme and product names included. I don't care what Woolworths say - it's clear to me that they've copied Frankie's products. And they've done it in typical Woolworths 'style'. They have masses of me-too brands on their shelves; this is a SOP (standard operating procedure).
I suspect the PR that's been generated for Frankies is more than they could ever have dreamed. In the last 24 hours they've opened Facebook and Twitter accounts, and launched a "store locator" application. I really, really hope that they keep their focus on selling softdrinks, and convert all this buzz to business. Good luck Frankies and Mike Schmidt. Don't take your eye off your business. Ignore Woolworths from here on in :)
