This little one has started her Klopse training early - she is participating in the 'Cape Minstrel Carnival' that is being held in Cape Town today. The Carnival comprises thousands of satin-dressed people, singing and dancing through the streets. No floats or effects - only people and plenty, plenty noise.
The Minstrel Carnival (to give it the proper name) is an annual event with it's origins during the era when there were slaves. It's always held on 2nd January (Tweede Nuwejaar). It's become a massive tourist attraction - or is certainly marketed to the tourists. But the real customers are the local community who camped out overnight on the route to get prime spots.
My best is that the Parade stops on a regular basis for the Muslims to observe prayer. Capetonians don't blink - we are a multi-everything society - but I did overhear puzzled questions from tourists and see eyebrows shoot skywards. Prayer stopped play? How quaint, said one.

Good to see theat her costume has room to grow. She can wear it again next year! Are the umbrellas traditionally part of the costume or are theymore practical?
