In 1949, as a 14 year-old border in Diocesan College's Founders House (Bishops), my father was tasked by the then House-master, Piley Reese, to take charge of laying the crazy paving path that crosses the quad. He was back at Founders this week-end for his 60th school reunion, and I went with him to inspect his workmanship.
He showed me the gutters near the sundial, and admitted that they'd given him some trouble. He also pointed out the stones near the dining room door with ripples. He remembers sorting and putting those aside for that spot.
I wonder how many boys and men have walked across those paving stones. The stone had come from a Beaufort West farmer, and Dad's memory is that he was told that since the stone came from his home area, he should do the job. I suspect it had more to do with the fact that even then he was conscientious and efficient. After all, 63 years later, the pathway's still there.
But here's the thing. If and when the pathway is replaced, I'm betting that there won't be any pupils willing or able to relay a new path. This time money will buy contractors to do the work. I've always known that Dad is a remarkable man. This confirmed it once again.
