Oops!

The taverna opposite the one where I usually eat has had to do a total tear down and rebuild due to code violations. It has been very interesting to watch the process. Today, this gentleman was drilling holes in the I-beam. The drilling process was fascinating. The marking of the beam was a very involved process to ensure that everything matched up. The drill had a powerful magnet on it to hold it to the beam so he could operate the bit and add the lubricant. After he was finished, they lowered the horizontal beams to the newly drilled holes. When I asked the owner of the taverna where I eat, he said, "The architect said it was too high. The owner said it was too low! The contractor said it was maybe a little bit off! Now they change it to an entirely different height!"
Coming from a Health and Safety background, I kept trying not to count all the violations and laughed when a couple of men at another table started doing the same thing.
Never seen a drill like that. Good observations.

I guess the different height saves arguing about the finer detailing of the position. Whenever do architects, owners and contractors see eye to eye? (Your health and safety background might have posed you a few problems on our recent build programme.)

@sarasotab Thank you very much! I have been watching the project with great interest since they tore the old building down. I used to take our three boys to watch construction projects when they were small. We would sit in the car and watch bridges, highways, and buildings being built. It was a great way to spend a rainy day or to re-direct cranky children.

@helenhall I guess it does. They have a meter marked out by centimeters on the wall of the building that abuts the new build. I assume so they could decide the new height. I notice health and safety because I can't not, but really, after living in the Middle East for so many years, I am well acquainted with how things usually get done. :)
