One of 100 solid cast iron figures destined to be dispersed throughout the world. They are modeled on Antony Gormley, the sculptor, and three have been loaned to the Folkestone Triennial. This solitary figure stands underneath the loading bay of the harbour arm, looking out to sea. Like his contemporary situated on the other side of the harbor, he can only be seen completely at low tide for a two hour period.
'The artist intended them to "bear witness to what it is to be alive and alone in space and time" and "to celebrate the still and silent work of sculpture. The work is designed to be placed within the flow of lived time".
The third Iron Man is temporarily residing in Margate harbour for the Triennial.
@salza Thanks Sally. The figure is so weathered by the elements that he is covered in rust. He really does make a statement when you see him from a few feet away.
There are Antony Gormley sculptures on Crosby beach, Merseyside. 100 cast-iron, life-size figures spread out along three kilometres of the foreshore, stretching almost one kilometre out to sea. Your sculpture here has a great scene to view.
@gamelee Thanks for that Lee, I would love to see them. Are they near you? These statues fascinate me. At first I dismissed them as a gimmick but they are growing on me. There is a salt lake, Lake Ballard, in Australia and AG has put 51 replicas of I believe Aborigines living in the area there. They are very stylised though. Two of them have enough even been stolen. Sad comment on the age we live in.
I live about 30 minutes drive from Crosby. The status there are always being photographed and there are a number on 365 . http://365project.org/tags/crosby?page=1
@brennieb Thanks very much Brennie, I did too when I saw him, really impressive. Couldn't get any nearer as the public weren't allowed next to him. Guess Health & Safety were worried someone would fall off into the sea. Loads of slippery seaweed there too.
@suesouthwood Thanks Sue. I think they're just here for the Triennial which ends 5 November. Definitely worth a visit though if you can:). There's also one of the figures at Margate outside the Turner Contemporary and Tracy Emin's Unmade Bed is being displayed alongside Turner paintings from 12 October.
They are so interesting figures. I have seen them in Liverpool when the sea is coming up at sunset. It's a bit eerie as it looks like someone is about drawn.
Lovely image.
the light is rendered superbly and i just love the composition and those gorgeous shadows on the floor. your fab PoV has him standing as the perfect sentinel over-watching the distant white cliffs..
@jorlam Thanks very much indeed for the time you take in evaluating my images. If it wasn't for your encouragement and positivity at the start of my project, I am sure I would have abandoned it months ago. I am so glad I didn't - big thank you!
love how hes just standing there, there is a strength about him
@peadar Thanks for commenting. No recognisable facial features!
@suzanne234 Thanks very much Suzanne, I do too:)
