This afternoon I visited The Ossuary at St Leonard's Church in Hythe, a place I'd wanted to see for quite a while, and today the opportunity presented itself. I was a little wary in case it seemed downright spooky, but it wasn't the case at all. Fascinating is the right word.
Amazing. In Rome - apart for the catacombs, of course - there is a church whose crypt is decorated with the monks' bones... kind of rococò plaster, only it's tibias, jaws, pelvises... sadly, photographing is prohibited.
@domenicododaro I was also disappointed to see that photography was prohibited when we visited there some 10 years ago...very interesting place though, had to buy a post card to prove I'd been!!!
@fbailey ...I have this exact setup in the living room ;)
That is not a photo that you often see. Thank you so much for the link - it was fascinating. Your side on view of that wall has such good lighting and shows them so well. :)
That is fab! Reminds me of the Bone House in Hallstatt, Austria, where all the skulls are painted with dates and a picture of the cause of death. Thought of you yesterday when we sailed into Dover!
Great shot. I believe it's one of two in the country. It looks a lot more open than the one at Rushton that I visited earlier in the year. That was reached by a small winding stair case and there was only just enough room to squeeze past the bones and skulls not one for anyone claustrophobic!
