This artwork from the Folkestone Triennial was created by Mark Dion. The Mediterranean Gull is found in larger quantities in Folkestone than in any other place in the UK, some people like them, many people hate them. The artist created the Mobile Gull as a staffed information centre to educate people on these birds and hopefully create a better understanding of them.
@hermann I didn't realise ibis were a problem over there, that's interesting ... I think the gulls here are so used to being fed if someone has food and sits outside eating the gulls crowd around hopefully and can be intimidating.
@maggiemae Thanks for commenting Maggie:) Mark Dion said after his first visit to the town that "gulls are the most conspicuous non-human denizens of Folkestone" and the idea must have come from that comment. I saw it for the first time this afternoon and it stopped me in my tracks!
@carole_sandford Must say I'm not a great fan of them, but I do agree that circumstances have led to them becoming a nuisance through no fault of their own. I live in the country and love to see huge crowds of them following the farmer's plough over the fields.
Interesting Big Bird. Gulls are a damned nuisance here. They've multiplied like mad and flocks of them are infesting rubbish tips and the like and pooing all over nearbly buildings.
@peadar But it is different don't you think?
