Mobile Gull Appreciation Unit

This artwork from the Folkestone Triennial was created by Mark Dion. The Mediterranean Gull is found in larger quantities in Folkestone than in any other place in the UK, some people like them, many people hate them. The artist created the Mobile Gull as a staffed information centre to educate people on these birds and hopefully create a better understanding of them.
Funny! You wouldn't want that to leave its mark, or pinch your sandwiches :-)

I guess the gulls are like our ibis and a product of our rubbish left lying around and being fed rather than foraging for their natural diet :)

@suzanne234 Oh I did laugh at your comment! So funny - or for it to perch on your car roof:)

They are putting a lot of work into something so ordinary like a seagull!

@hermann I didn't realise ibis were a problem over there, that's interesting ... I think the gulls here are so used to being fed if someone has food and sits outside eating the gulls crowd around hopefully and can be intimidating.

@fbailey Haha, that made me laugh more 🚗

I don't dislike them, though I don't live at the coast! I did notice on holiday though, that they are flippin noisy!

@maggiemae Thanks for commenting Maggie:) Mark Dion said after his first visit to the town that "gulls are the most conspicuous non-human denizens of Folkestone" and the idea must have come from that comment. I saw it for the first time this afternoon and it stopped me in my tracks!

@carole_sandford Must say I'm not a great fan of them, but I do agree that circumstances have led to them becoming a nuisance through no fault of their own. I live in the country and love to see huge crowds of them following the farmer's plough over the fields.

Great shot. Like the idea and reliasation.

@brennieb Thanks Brennie, I think we probably have done without intending to do so.

Interesting Big Bird. Gulls are a damned nuisance here. They've multiplied like mad and flocks of them are infesting rubbish tips and the like and pooing all over nearbly buildings.

We have sea gulls in my town and we are hours away from the sea. They seem to like the river water too. This one sure is a beauty.

@golftragic @littleconnie @joansmor Thank you!
@peadar But it is different don't you think?
September 18th, 2017
@fbailey Different it is. There is a Monty Python feel to it. Or perhaps Some Mothers Do Ave 'em? 😎

@peadar Thanks for my morning chuckle!
