Ten Years, Ten Lessons

Solheimar, South Iceland

@kuva Still in Iceland! Wouldn’t have expected that ten years ago… I slept outside tonight, up on a ridge with an amazing view of the sunset. Something about untouched wilderness and sunsets over mountains makes me want to write poem-ish things, so here's one for you. I wasn’t sure how to sum up my words with a photo, but me and the sunset seemed to work. Cheers to the next ten years.

2005, 5th grade, 10 years old,
Still losing my baby teeth,
I spent my allowance of $3.50 a week
on fish tanks, Sims 2, and build-a-bears.
My brother and I just bought pet ferrets,
And I started horseback riding lessons.
For the 6th time, I switched piano teachers,
Everyone was not always staring at a smart phone,
And energy was cheap and would last forever.
I had the biggest crush on Jack Gallagher, and
Kaitlin Carpenter was either my best friend or my enemy, depending on the day.

2015, Senior in College, 20 years old,
Teeth straight from years of braces,
I make $10.25 an hour at a part time job,
which I spend on lenses, trips to Iceland and contra dancing
Ferrets, rabbits, hedgehogs, cats and dogs have passed away,
But I still own the horse I learned to ride on.
For 7 more years, I took piano lessons from JP,
It felt as if the world ended when I broke my phone,
Oil production peaked and then plateaued.
Jack killed himself senior year of High School
Kaitlin remains my best friend, it doesn’t depend on the day.

10 lessons for 10 years
Straight teeth are worth nothing without a genuine smile
Do what you love, love what you do, the money will follow
Buy less stuff, love what you buy
We have more to learn from animals than they do from us
Free horses are not actually free (also, listen to your parents when they say don’t get a horse)
A good teacher finds you only when you’re ready to learn
Put down the phone and then you’ll start communicating
Dependency on fossil fuel for limitless growth is not sustainable
There is no tomorrow, do it today
Find the people that give you a reason to live, everyday.
Jae
Thanks for the perspective, really!

I hope Kaitlin is still your best friend! This is a composition to remember! You could publish it! You are also an explorer by heart from this photo!

That's beyond beautiful! What an exquisite life lesson you shared...both beautiful and insightful. Your words and pace are beautiful , dramatic and spot on in their conclusion. The photo is a nice one, but it was what was behind that pretty face that touched my heart!

@juliedduncan Sharing my heart is always a pleasure; it's a rewarding experience. I should ad that to my lesson list. ;) Thanks for viewing and commenting.
@kerosene I love sleeping outside! It's strange in Iceland, as it never gets dark, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Thanks for viewing, reading and commenting. I appreciate it.
@kali66 Thank you, Kali. And thank you again for the opportunity to participate in 5+2, I really enjoy exploration through self-portraits, and it is providing the last bit of motivation I needed to take them.
