These birds are amazing and can be annoying at the same time. They love peanuts on the shell. Of you have patients they will come eat out of your hand. Some will even sit in your hand or on your knee for a bit and talk to you. But the on the annoying side, they can make a lot of loud noise and they will chase other birds away, as they are not good at sharing.
WOW what a photo! Scrub Jays can be very gregarious! We had them in the mountains outside LA, and Ken would play tug-o-war with them with a peanut! ALL jays are loud of course, and kind of rule the territory when they're around! But don't we love them?!! Lucky you to have had this wondereful experience!
