Peppermint

By the side of the house a peppermint patch has gone rogue. In the picture, some new shoots are growing in the swampy area close to the main patch, which is already knee high. I drink peppermint tea almost daily and dry it for the winter and give it away by the bundle, yet there is always more. Before starting this month, I’m not sure I was quite as aware as now of what must be the extraordinary fertility of my garden. In the background you can see the tall grass. Joe feels strongly about keeping the grass mowed, though the swampy area often must wait until midsummer when the ground dries up a bit. However, this year, the lawnmower broke. According to the Internet, our three year old has a particular part that gives out after only 60 to 100 hours! And the part is not available, so people suggested replacing the entire back end. Somehow, intrepid Joe found the part and fixed the lawnmower. Ever since then, either he’s been working or it’s been raining. So the yard has become a beautiful meadow with waving grasses and oxeye daisies and it will be quite troublesome to mow now. The peppermint is allowed to go rogue. The grass is not.
My grandmother used to dry peppermint and make tea with it. This story took me back. Nice photo of it with some great light. Thanks for the memory

Love the story. Do you drink peppermint tea because you like it, or because it has some beneficial value? Good to post the grass and weeds in all their glory

Think twice about this "Peppermint supposedly helps to ward off bad energy and keep the home in perfect harmony, while spearmint has been used as protection against curses or to attract money." We used to have mint growing around doors to ward off ants.

@ethelperry I like it. But I have to say that it tastes "healthier", more like a tonic than, say, a cup of coffee.
@joysabin interesting. I love to drink the peppermint, but was sort of sorry it's not spearmint, which I love even more in tea and cook with to boot. Most of the spearmint (that you buy at the nursery at Wal-Mart, for example) that I find is apparently a different variety than the spearmint I really love. But if I find the good kind, I'll find somewhere to plant it for sure.
