In spite of the bright sunlight from outside streaming in through the narrow windows, the undercroft of Battle Abbey, which has multiple rooms connected by small doorways, is distinctly unwelcoming. It was once used for storage by the abbey cellarar but when the abbey fell into disrepair it is said to have been used by smugglers.
