Pelican Feeding Time by gaylewood

Pelican Feeding Time

A pelican opening wide for an incoming fish isn't something I see very often so I thought it would be a fun project photo for today.

Fabulous timing Gayle. I'm intrigued by the bits sticking up on his top bill. I haven't noticed anything like this on our pelicans.

April 13th, 2016
@merrelyn Thanks for commenting, Merrelyn! From what I read online about the American White Pelicans, in the breeding season there is a laterally flattened "horn" on the upper bill, located about one-third the bill's length behind the tip. This is the only one of the eight species of pelican to have a bill "horn". The horn is shed after the birds have mated and laid their eggs. :-)
