I was quite surprised when this Pileated Woodpecker flew into the backyard this afternoon and started foraging on the ground for insects. I was eating my lunch on the deck when he arrived and I couldn't believe he stayed around long enough for me to rush inside for my camera and get some shots. These are loud birds with whinnying calls...I heard his calls for awhile before he flew into the yard. Needless to say, I was quite happy to have this lunchtime visitor.
@terrinorthwind Thanks so much for your comment and fav, Terri! Yes, he is beautiful. Before today, I haven't been able to get this close to one so I was quite excited when he landed in the yard and stayed awhile. :-)
@365projectorgjenfurj Thank you, Jen! I appreciate your comment and fav! Yes, I felt quite lucky that he landed in our yard...a special visit for sure. :-)
@milaniet Thanks so very much for your comment and fav, Milanie! I haven't been able to get this close to one until today so I was quite excited. This is also the first time I've seen one spend so much time on the ground. :-)
@shylaine3304 Thank you so much for your comment and fav, Erika! Yes, I think they're really cool looking birds. Their behavior is quite interesting also. :-)
@maureenpp Thank you, Maureen! I appreciate your comment and fav! Yes, they're definitely interesting birds...and quite large, almost the size of a crow. :-)
This bird rather amuses me Gayle. Looks like a cross between a woodpecker and a woodpigeon. Now you know - never sit down to eat your lunch without checking first that you have your camera with you. The next delight might not hang around for you.
@helenhall Thank you ever so much for your wonderful comment, Helen! I try to remember to take my camera with me EVERYWHERE but sometimes I forget. Luckily, it was just a few steps away this time. :-)
