Giant stick Insect. by happysnaps

Giant stick Insect.

Checking the garden after the heavy rain I came face to face with this stick insect ( 34cms) hanging from a twig! I have never seen one this huge.
Good grief! The perspective makes it look as big as a branch! The biggest I've ever seen is half that size. Fantastic and a fav, Valerie.

@mbemis @hermann @susiemc @pennystot @ziggy77 @kerristephens @skstein @ceilidh I appreciate your comments & Favs. I was bending down cutting a Rose, stood up & came literally face to face. My husband came out to measure him as I couldn't believe his length. Thank you for comments & Favs.

@happysnaps what do those insects do? Are they poisonous? Do they bite?

@skstein Stick insects are so named for their effective camouflage among the woody plants where they feed. They imitate twigs swaying in the wind by rocking back and forth as they move. Most stick insects cannot harm you, they don’t have thorns or poison. But some species do have spikes on their legs designed for pinching predators. Their natural camouflage can make them extremely difficult to spot. Once my Grandson picked one up & it was prickly to touch & seemed to attach itself to him, not as big as mine though!
