Fine show of feathers

Out sunning himself today on the riverside. We also had several good sightings of Kingfishers along the river today, which was special. They are too fast for me to capture though, and don't stick around for a photoshoot.

Out of time tonight, so signing off despite not having completed my viewing, commenting, acknowledgements etc etc etc. Sleep beckons after burning hte candle both ends this weekend.
This shot looks fabulous against black, it really brings out the ripples on the water and the detail on the feathers. Have a good nights sleep.

The detail of the feathers is quite lovely. How exciting to spot some Kingfishers, I don't believe I've actually ever seen one.

I like how elegant she looks, with the feathery feathers.

A lovely shot of this beautiful bird Helen. I am sorry you are burning the candle from both ends, please do take care of yourself! It's important. I am not going to catch up on enough shots tonight because of sleep too :) Kingfishers are undoubtedly very hard to capture, I too would have enjoyed them with the naked eye only. I hope you are well!

Agree with Babs, this one looks fantastic on black! Love the slightly windblown look of the feathers. Hope you get a good night's sleep, Helen. :-)

@onewing thank you Babs. Yes, the black works well for this - I hadn't tried
@kwind thank you Kim
@suzanne234 thank you Suzanne. Mr H spotted them in the morning when we were out, but I never see them. We went back in the afternoon and this time, I did - flashes of colour whizzing along just above the water.
@taffy thank you. She did seem to have her best plumage on show.
@kerosene thank you Caroline. I am lacking in discipline when it comes to getting enough sleep, but it finally catches up on me.
@gaylewood thank you Gayle - yes I slept well.

Great shot and I like the crop too. There is a lot of patience required in getting some bird shots. I know one fellow in our club actually sets the camera up on a particular spot and then waits for the birds to come. It can take hours!

i once took a garden chair and sat on the side of a farm road waiting for birds. after an hour, i gave up. when we were driving away, there came a couple of hawks. story of my photographic life. may i ask why you cropped it this way?

also, sleep has been eluding me for the last several weeks. and i am totally useless when that happens. then at the office i often catch myself nodding off. go figure.

@summerfield the crop comes following a failed attempt to brush out some ugly branches in front of the rest of the bird. They were bothering me intensely. So I had no choice. I too was nodding off this afternoon at work. Must find something more absorbing to do tomorrow.

@helenhall - my naturopath doctor gave me something called 'magsmart', some kind of magnesium drink. it helped with my sleep but i couldn't abide by the nasty taste. i rather prefer to poke my eyes with a stick, although not really.

The spidery reflections in the water make a good backdrop to those feathers

How lovely that you got to see so many kingfishers, I have only ever seen one at a time and so rarely too! Interesting angle you took for this shot, I do like the reflections in the water.
