I have spent this afternoon making a brave attempt to finish off all the Christmas treats that I will no longer be able to eat after today. Here, the very last of my mince pies together with brandy cream - consumed after dinner this evening.
From tomorrow, I am going dairy free - at least for a month. This is a reluctant attempt to discover whether dairy is the cause of my various nasal/head blockage issues and wheeziness. I have no idea how I am going to cope - I love cheese, natural yoghurt and butter, and to cap it all, someone told me this morning that wine has dairy products in it!
Well I have since discovered that there are plenty of dairy free wines. Phew!
So this afternoon, whilst taking down the decorations (in a mistaken life long held belief that 6 January was 12th night and not 5 January), I wantonly binged on anything dairy related.
The cake, however, remains untouched - and will become forbidden territory. Am I fearful? Yes I am.
oh my. well this certainly made my mouth water - the image, not the idea of going dairy free. i am trying to be alcohol free in january, and i think combining that with avoiding dairy would blow my mind ... though i'm sure it would be good for me ... will be interested to hear how you fare
@pistache I couldn't give up both at once - but I am trying (so far failing) to be more sensible about bed times, so when you find me having late night comment exchanges with you, do tell me off!
ditto :) ... ummm i don't view this as too late yet though?! i also read somewhere over christmas that not getting enough sleep is bad for us over and above making us tired ... so had also resolved to try harder ...
It's a delicious food shot. I wish you well in the dairy free. I stopped as much sugar as possible becasus of osteo arthritis. It seemed to make a difference for a while - but now I am not sure!
A very yummy and tempting looking dish. Good luck on your month of dairy free. Bound to be helpful at some level, and hoping it doesn't turn out you have to do this for the long term.
Looks like a photo from a recipe book - delicious.
On the dairy free front, look out for Alpro products as replacements for milk (although I can't get it to work in tea or coffee) and yoghurt. The vanilla one is really nice. I've been dairy free due to an intolerance for years but have to sin sometimes - cheese is my downfall. If you decide to continue after a month, ewe's cheese or goats cheese is much kinder and has no effect on me. Good luck anyway - and well done for sorting out the dairy free wine.
Whew, at least you will be able to drown your sorrows. Good luck with it. I would find it hard to resist the brandy butter but luckily I don't like mince pies.
Oh, now that IS a dairy binge! Once you figure out whether you have to be absolutely, completely dairy free of anything that has been produced in a place with dairy contamination, it will set the course for your future eating. But some of us (yes, me) can have some types of diary, but not all. And meanwhile, I prepare almost all my meals completely dairy free anyway! Need some recipes?
Looks yummy! Yes, dairy does contribute to congestion. You may want to look into almond milk. Not really dairy-as it's made from nuts and I don't know how- and a helpful substitute when needed. I am mostly dairy free now because dairy can also contribute to inflammation.

We have been away for a few days so I can't comment on all the photos I have missed, but I have checked them out. Will catch up soon
