I tried to do another macro and I am not entirely pleased with the results and suggestions would be appreciated. I did use manual focus and magnifying filters. Gail bought me this tie tac with matching cuff links in Italy over 40 years ago. The tie tac measures 5 mm x 10 mm. Best Viewed Large

You know, Harry, I wish I could say something helpful, but I've never used magnifying filters, only extension tubes and reverse lensing. I know that the depth of field on a shot like this makes focusing really tricky - especially on something like this, that's kind of in relief, instead of something with a flatter surface, like a coin. Did you use a tripod or anything like that?
@kerristephens thank you Kerri, I have never seen it this clearly before @kimmistephens thank you Kimmi, I think I will start wearing ties again :) @scooter Thank you Scooter, it is a nice piece of jewelry @grannysue Thank you Linda, it is my favorite one.
@beautifulthing Thank you Shelly, no I didn't use a tripod, You have made me think of some possible solutions; using the tripod, putting it in live view, and a shutter release. I am going to try and get this macro stuff down :)
@hjbenson I have no doubt you will become an expert! :) Another trick, if you don't have a shutter release yet, can be to use the self-timer on the camera.
I think the most distracting thing is the reflection of light. I wonder if you could soften the light or adjust it somehow...
Keep at it, you'll get it.
I'm going to agree with @beautifulthing I've tried several different approaches when doing close ups like that and they always seem to come out the most clear when a tripod is used. Your own suggestion of a shutter release would help as well.
@beautifulthing Thanks Shelly @mstipe Thank you Michelle, I agree, but no matter where I put the lights I still got the glare, I figure natural light outside would have been better @webfoot Thank you Paul, I will try the tripod and try to diffuse the light
