Oh, the horror! by homeschoolmom

Oh, the horror!

One of the more interesting, yet disturbing, displays at the MIT Museum was of this dropped piano. According to the photo behind it, MIT students dropped a piano off a 6-story building to see what would happen. As a home schooler, I'm usually all about hands-on learning, but this one made the musician in me cringe! LOL!

Wow...that seems rather wasteful!

@kwind I know. Sad, but interesting to see the insides.

maybe it was ruined and unfixable, and therefore not so much of a waste. it is an interesting exhibit

I find myself torn like you are. Fascinated by what happened to it from a scientific viewpoint but disturbed that anyone would want to!!!!

@jaynspain I hope so.
@ceilidh That's exactly how I feel! LOL!

Oh no, hope it was a beyond repair one!

Lovely capture of the whole piano.

@jennywren It looks like an old one, so I hope it is.
@lynnilou Thanks!

Egad...I hope this is a piano that had a cracked sound board or something massively wrong to warrant its destruction in the name of art! Well captured by you.
April 5th, 2014
@taffy I think it was destroyed more in the name of science than art. Maybe those same engineers should have attempted to put humpty dumpty back together again!
April 5th, 2014
Well I'm sure many people who are not at MIT could have had a good guess at what would happen! Makes for a powerful photo though.
April 5th, 2014
@judithg Hahaha! So true, they should have know what would happen.

Sometimes it is fascinating to take something apart slowly and carefully......clearly the students were feeling impatient!.......great capture of a fab display

A great capture Lisa.

Very interesting capture and the story behind it!

How sad
April 6th, 2014
@sarasdadandmom Yes, it is.
April 6th, 2014
Oh my goodness, that is kind of weird. Cool capture, though
April 6th, 2014
Oh my no! I'm with you!
April 6th, 2014
Oh how strange to be paying all that money to attend MIT and all along I could have told them that it would splinter into many shattered pieces
April 6th, 2014
@mittens @luvmynynix Thanks!
@digitalrn Yes, I could think of better uses of $45K a year!
April 6th, 2014
I agree with you! IF you are smart enough to get into MIT, you could figure out what would happen without harming the piano. Great title and you captured this well!

@kathyladley Thanks!
April 6th, 2014
Really interesting capture..but I agree with you, a bit disconcerting.

@bristolrose Thanks!

Intriguing and somewhat mind boggling experiment... I hope the piano was no longer usable when it was dropped!
