These sunflowers grow along the highway about 15 minutes from our house. I have made several attempts to get pictures of them, but couldn't figure out how to get to the road behind them. Today, I finally figured it out. However, most of the sunflowers are already dead. A few remained, but they are showing their age. I have never seen sunflowers this small. These aren't the 6-foot high, a foot in diameter flowers that I'm used to. The plants barely reached 3 feet high and the flowers are probably only 6 inches wide, half the size. Guess they don't grow will in NC's red clay.
@pinkpaintpot Thanks. I had a hard time finding any with color still on them. Most of the plants were dead. But, I got lucky and the sun popped out for a second just as I went to take the shot, so that helped, too. @joansmor Thanks! @digitalrn It's the only view I could get. They were behind a fence. I was shooting through a hole in the fence. All the flowers in front of me were dead, but there were a few the side that were still alive. I couldn't get a straight on shot because they faced the highway (not officially an interstate, but this section looks like an interstate with speed limit of 70 mph, so I couldn't just pull over and take a quick picture). @swilde Yes, it does look like autumn, doesn't it? I never thought about that. It's not really autumn here, still in the height of summer heat. But, it's been dry and the ground is mostly red clay, so stuff doesn't grow very well. @paulam Thanks so much for the FAV!
