On Defense! by homeschoolmom

On Defense!

My son's team is short on players, so he had to play offense and defense today for 3 scrimmage games in nearly 100-degree heat. We only had two extra players and one of them got hurt. Long hot day. All in all, our team did great until the last scrimmage. We had back to back games while they rested in the shade, and they literally had two full teams, while we barely fielded one. Even so, they only managed to score on our boys twice.
With that weather, you have to drink a lot of water

@hjbenson Unfortunately, they were giving them cold water, which was upsetting their stomachs.

I really wonder sometimes about these programs. 100 degrees is just too dangerous for a scrimmage and student athletes. Water or no water, it's just too easy to get over-heated and dehydrated. But it sounds like your team gave it their best in spite of the conditions. Glad to see that no one was rushed to the hospital!!

@olivetreeann Sadly, when you are in the South, it's going to be in the dangerous temperature ranges for most of the season. And when we lived in NH, it was dangerously cold. Why can't we live some place with moderate temperature? LOL!

@homeschoolmom Either a more moderate climate or an indoor arena (which has a whole other set of issues with artificial grass!). We dealt with similar issues in the summer with traveling soccer teams. The worst was one year in Rhode Island. Temp of 102 degrees and I got a minor case of heat stroke. Not good. But we make do and support the kids as best we can as soccer/football moms!
