When I was a kid, my grandmother gave me a wooden plaque with the legend of the dogwood on it. It said the reason the flowers are shaped like a cross is because the dogwood was used to make Jesus' cross. It also said that's the reason the dogwood tree is small and gnarled, so it can't be used as a cross again. I thought that was appropriate for Easter week.
