Coming up the mountain out of Afton, VA, we hit very thick fog. In fact, we had a hard time finding the entrance ramp to the interstate. The fog was rather crazy for about 5 miles, then we drove out of it coming down the other side of the mountain - and it was noon, not early morning or late at night.
