078 - Beside the road just inside the entrance gate to Holy Trinity Church in Micklegate, York are these stocks.
The inscription in front of them reads 'Wooden stocks have probably stood on this spot since the 16th century. They were used for the punishment of minor crimes and nusances until changes in the law in 1838. The original stocks are displayed within the church, these replicas being set up in 2006'.
But what it doesn't explain is why there are 5 holes for legs to be fastened in. Is there special provision here for any one legged criminals? - or for 3 legged criminals?? - Who knows!
Well...people were smaller then, AND they weren't meant to be comfortable. I AM curious though... can you measure the holes??LOL (found online instructions for constructing your own stocks..they use 7 inches for diameter of neck hole and 4 inches for hands.) 18cm 10cm
It's taken a while, but I got back to measure the holes - they are about 5 inches. Since they are close to the ground, I think they must be meant for ankles - but why 5?

Very puzzling and amusing to speculate about the five holes!
The stocks are an interesting reminder of harsher times - but perhaps we've made some progress by not using this and other implements
Thank you Marie
The five holes has intrigued me for quite a few years, but I've not come across a reasonable explanation yet
Thank you, glad you like it
I think that it would fit around a neck very tightly!
ok, I'll check next time I'm in that part of town!
