160 - A rather different bit of history today! I shared a shot about a month ago ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-12) showing a temporary grandstand being erected for the performance of York's cycle of mystery plays, which tell the bible story from creation to final judgement, which date back to about 1350 and which are still performed in the Early English language.
Historically these were performed by different guilds on the backs of carts at various points around the city, rather than at a central site. To recapture something of the atmosphere of that approach, two carts were used over this weekend and two plays were performed from them at two places near the Minster.
In this shot we have Noah about to release a raven after the 40 days and nights of rain had ended.
A bonus was that the chap who played the role of Noah was at college with me many years ago, so it was nice to have a brief catch-up between performances!
Neat shot! Love the ravens! They are such smart birds. Where I live, about 35 miles north-east of Seattle in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains the ravens will often fly overhead, but the crows won't let them land! Crows will often be in hot pursuit of the poor, hapless ravens who just emit a weary "gronk" as they are harassed by their smaller cousins. The ravens rule the mountains, but would love to take some lowland territory.
I think that it's a mith that story about that they eat human eyes.
Thank you Lydia, they are attractive birds!
