162 - The relative tranquility of the area around York Minster was shattered this afternoon by the noise of the appearance of an RAF rescue helicopter over the central tower.
A crew member was winched down onto the tower roof, followed shortly afterwards by a stretcher. However, in this case it was an exercise, rather than a genuine emergency rescue.
The tower rises some 230 feet above ground level and includes climbing 275 steps and visitors are allowed to make the climb to enjoy the spectacular views from the top, but some find it quite a challenge, and there have been medical emergencies up there before, and at least one genuine helicopter rescue.
Great picture...training is so important because when it comes to a real rescue it takes know how for a successful mission. I witnessed one. if you care to see it please click on the link. http://365project.org/bruni/365/2011-03-29
