A postcard from Cleethorpes

188 - I couldn't leave yesterdays visit to Cleethorpes without sharing something of it as a holiday destination, so here is a quick postcard for you!

Cleethorpes was once a holiday destination of choice for many, particularly people from the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. With the coming of cheap package holidays abroad, it's fortunes declined, but more recently it has become popular for day trips. It was certainly busy yesterday!

For me it does bring back childhood memories of the seaside. The left image shows a sculpture of a bucket and spade, once an essential for the beach, and one of a number of sculptures in the seafront gardens. The top right image shows donkeys providing rides for children, and the donkeys were being kept really busy! The bottom right image shows visitors on the beach, and the remains of the pier.

Many other holiday facilities are provided - including children's games along the promenade, a road train, a miniature railway with real steam locomotives and a boating lake, amongst other things.

Large ships can be seen passing as they enter the Humber Estuary, and two large First World War forts can be seen built offshore to protect the estuary.

On a day like yesterday, with plenty of sunshine, what else could I say but 'Wish you were here'!
I've never been there, we used to go to Filey. I particularly like the donkey picture!

Like Louise I've never been, and like all seaside places I suppose you need a nice day to see them at their best.

Brilliant collage Ian, you could publish it as a postcard. Each of the three images fits perfectly. You were lucky to be there on a perfect day.
Thanks for your most interesting descriptions. Fav

You should contact the councils at Cleethorpes to see if how many of this would they like printed! It would indeed make a fabulous postcard. Lovely collage and it looks like a beautiful place to visit!

@louisefrance

Thank you Louise - it's many years since I last visited, but Cleethorpes, along with the Yorkshire resorts tended to be where we usually holidayed when I was a child.

@bruni

Thank you Bruni - the donkeys were very popular with the children! I've a vague memory that there once used to be camels on the beech here as well many years ago!

@collin

Cleethorpes doesn't have the drama of cliffs like many of the Yorkshire resorts, but it was an ideal place to take mum with her new wheelchair, since everywhere is flat.

@tonydebont

Thank you Tony, and thank you for the fav! We were indeed very fortunate with the weather, since Cleethorpes is very much an outdoor holiday place, with relatively few places of indoor entertainment.

excellant Ian how do you put the three together?

@yellowroses

Thank you Marian - there are several programs that will achieve this. I tend to use Picmonkey which is a piece free online software ( http://www.picmonkey.com/). It's fairly easy to use and will allow a variety of different layouts and number of pictures, and you can create images at a range of qualities. Do try it - it's fun!
