187 - An opportunity to visit Cleethorpes (on the Lincolnshire coast) for the day, so it was nice to enjoy my fist day this year on the coast! The weather was beautiful and the place was crowded, and I had a nice long walk along the coast with my mum and brother. Towards the southern part of Cleethorpes, we came across a marker in the walkway - the Greenwich Meridian.
It was in 1884 that the Greenwich Meridian was established by international agreement as the line of zero longitude, and the basis for navigation and time keeping throughout the world. Following it north from Greenwich (London) and eventually it reaches the coast here at Cleethorpes. The Greenwich Meridian is where east meets west, and a metal marker shows it's exact location on the Marine Embankment.
The left panel of my collage shows the marker in the walkway, and the right panel shows a direction marker to a number of well known places.
Cool! How many people get photographed straddling the line between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres? I've been half in Canada and half in the USA at the Peace Arch Park at Blain, WA and southern BC.
I didn't realise there was a line at Cleethorpes! I like your presentation with the metal marker and the signpost. "Well known places" seems a bit of an understatement somehow!
Thank you Caren - you are welcome to use it in class. If you want a higher resolution copy of the collage I can email one to you. I also have a shot of the information panel if you want a copy of that.
@if1 That would be great! My work email is clmiller@gccisd.net . Thank you so much!!! The kids will think this is so cool, and it will really help them to remember the Prime Meridian.
Your pictures in this colloage are very impressive and I enjoyed reading your narrative. also something either new or to remind you of like in this case. thank you so much.
Thank you Janet. It's many years since I was last in Cleethorpes, and I'd forgotten about it, but I do like this kind of marker for such features so it was good to capture it.
Caren, I'm getting a mail delivery failure when I send to the email address that you gave me. Is there a spelling mistake in that address (I used copy and paste rather than relying on my typing to copy it) or do you have an alternative email I could try?
@if1 I don't think there's a spelling error. It's clmiller@gccisd.net . Are you putting net at the end instead of com? If that doesn't work, try clc59@reagan.com . Thanks!

Thank you Bob - it's certainly a novel sight!
Thank you Monica, glad you like it!
Thank you Lydia - I love to see how such features are marked! Perhaps I should have a trip to Greenwich itself.

Thank you Tony, I do like such markers.
Thank you Junan.glad you like it - but I hope nobody relies on the South Pole marker as it seems to have got bent out of position!
Thank you Brian - they are a nice feature aren't they?
Thank you Marie, I find such markers fascinating!
Thank you Roslyn, glad you like it!
Thank you Jen!
Thank you Bruni, glad you like it!
Thank you Ruth - it was quite a novel thing to see!

I've tried again and still getting a mail delivery failure, so I've now tried the other email address. Hopefully this time it will work!
To quote my daughter, that would be 'a good stretch of the legs'!!
Thank you Kristin, glad you like it!
