219 - As part of my experimentation yesterday with HDR, I took this shot of one of the stained glass windows in St Michael le Belfrey church.
I've taken shots of this window before, but with limited success. The window faces a narrow road with buildings on the opposite side. Whenever the church is open, part of it is in shadow cast by the neighbouring buildings, while the rest can be seen against the sky.
HDR seems to provide a reasonable solution - the dark shadow at bottom left is reduced quite a lot, and detail can be seen across the image.
The four main panels show, from left to right, St John the Baptist, St Peter, St James the Great and St Wilfrid.
Great capture Ian and another great demonstration of the selective use of HDR. I think that the result looks natural and not obviously doctored and that appeals to me. Fav to remind me of what can be done.
Interesting photo Ian.
I take quite a few pictures of stained glass and one of the problems is flare in the lighter parts - usually the faces.
What I do to avoid this is to deliberately underexpose the photo and this seems to work.
Thank you David - I agree, generally slight underexposure gives a good result. The challenge here was the lower left area in shade, and I felt that hdr handled that quite well. The whole image would probably have been better if a touch darker.
