Sanctuary area of St Michael le Belfrey church

220 - Another attempt to explore the benefits of hdr photographs. Again, my aim is to make the shot look as natural as possible, while making dark areas more visible without overexposing light areas. I've made the colours slightly richer here, compared with my shot of two days ago. Is that an improvement?

Here is the sanctuary area of St Michael le Belfrey church in York, with an impressive reredos, which bears the ten commandments to the right and the Lords Prayer to the left.

The reredos and altar rails were designed by John Etty and completed by his son, William, in 1712. Sadly the presence of this reredos means that it is impossible to see the whole of the stained glass above and behind it

I like this shot. I have found that when I have taken church interiors they are hard to get enough light. I used to do time-exposures with film (back in the olden days). Sometimes it worked and sometimes not. This one is nice.

I think you've succeeded very well with both the lighting and the colours. Beautiful church.

Nicely balanced shot, and think you've got the warmth right

I think you've discovered the perfect balance Ian. The 'look' is that of a perfectly exposed 'natural' photo - if there is any such thing any more 8-)

My experiences of churches is, they are much darker . I know for a pic. light is necessary but for the right natural feeling you need the dark .
Always a choose between it.
Well captured and a well informing lines

@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob - I agree, it's a challenge to capture church interiors, which is why I've been playing with hdr to get a more even lighting result.

@pyrrhula

Thank you Pyrrhula - I agree, many churches are quite dark, but the problem with this church is that the lower part of the interior is quite dark and the upper part has lots of light, and I wanted to find a way of evening that out, and that is what hdr has allowed me to do.
