230 - Having become interested in ghost signs when I posted the Bile Beans advertisement a few days ago, I've been on the lookout for more. On Friday I posted Woods Mill, and today it's a two for one offering.
I have been aware of the FR Stubbs sign for many years. This ironmongers shop closed several years ago, but this low level sign survived and has been repainted, although it's position leaves it vulnerable to the scrapes of bicycles parked against it!
What I was surprised to find was a new painted sign high up on the wall for the Loch Fyne Seafood restaurant which now occupies the property that was formerly the FR Stubbs shop.
I had also forgotten that there was a second high level FR Stubbs sign which is located behind a block of new apartments and which is not visible from the road, but which apparently still exists. I need another visit to see if it can be seen from the grounds of the nearby Merchant Adventurer's Hall!
Great to see the sign restored and amazed that a modern painted sign has been added. Someone has an eye for history and values it's unique contribution to the city.
Thank you Marie - I wonder if the reversed colours and modern font on the Loch Fyne one are deliberate to show it's a current advert rather than an interesting bit of history?
Thank you Bob - I think they just get overlooked and forgotten. There is a second high level FR Stubbs painted sign, but a new block of apartments has been built in front of it, so I can't see it from the road.
A real nostalgic shot (for me!) , I loved the old Stubbs shop ----and the cellar with a small hatch at pavement level where bars of steel would be pushed up to the customer !
Thank you Helen - quite strenuous efforts are made to preserve the past in York.
Thank you Ruth - I'm guessing that the opposite colours and different fonts were chosen deliberately by Loch Fyne to give a more modern image
Thank you Tony - I agree, it definitely looks like someone has a sense of history in the creation of the new sign!
Thank you Jen, glad you like it!
Thank you Pyrrhula - we will have to have a break from them now, unless I can quickly find some more!
Thank you Louise - the Loch Fyne in York is one of a number spread throughout England
Thank you Brian - but that's exhausted the ones that I know!
Thank you Bill - it's interesting how words like 'ironmonger' have dropped out of use.
Thank you Ann - but that's exhausted the ones that I know!
Thank you Ladyjane - there are bikes left around all over York - it's a bit of a cycling city!
Thank you Caren - if you find any, I hope you will post some shots. I think they are fascinating insights into our past.
Thank you Netkonnexion - they are very interesting!
Thank you Livia - but that's exhausted the ones that I know!
Thank you Marie - I wonder if the reversed colours and modern font on the Loch Fyne one are deliberate to show it's a current advert rather than an interesting bit of history?
Thank you Janet - there are bikes left around all over York - it's a bit of a cycling city!
Thank you Bob - I think they just get overlooked and forgotten. There is a second high level FR Stubbs painted sign, but a new block of apartments has been built in front of it, so I can't see it from the road.
Thank you Kristin, they are fascinating. I was very surprised to find the new Loch Fyne sign.
