Hidden History - Precentor's Court by if1

Hidden History - Precentor's Court

253 - Near the centre of York, along High Petergate, close to Bootham Bar, and immediately to the left of the Hole in the Wall public house is a short narrow alley, shown in the shot on the left.

Beyond the alley is a very quiet but attractive street known as Precentor's Court. Facing you as you leave the alley is the attractive Georgian house shown in the centre shot, and there is another equally attractive house of the same age.

A Precentor is in charge of the organisation of liturgy and worship in a very large church or cathedral, and this street must have once been where his residence was (it may still be), and it is conveniently placed for the Minster, for as you turn right along Precentor's Court after leaving the alley, the view of the Minster in the right shot becomes visible.
Interesting history, love the light on the Minster and that little lane winding up to it, the double yellow lines and the curb are excellent lead ins.
