259 - After including three ghost sign shots in October, and an update this month on the restoration of the Bile Beans one ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-11-07), I became curious about any others that might be found in York. I've so far discovered another ten, with the help of the internet, so now all that remains is a few walks to see and record them all.
Today's example is found on Heslinton Road, on the side of what is now a private house, but which would once have been a corner shop, meeting the daily needs of local people.
John Smith's products were made at a brewery in Tadaster, about ten miles south-west of York. This brewery grew from small origins, and was bought by John Smith in 1847. By 1970, when it was taken over, it had grown to be one of the largest regional brewers in the country, with particularly strong sales across northern England.
Despite being taken over by other brewers, the Tadcaster brewery continues to make the bulk of John Smith's products.
Thank you Brian - I wondered about cloning out the log sign too, but thought leaving it in highlighted how much these ghost signs are ignored and neglected. Just above the log sign is a horseshoe magnet - the marketing image used for Magnet Ales
Thank you Helen - I think the log sign positioned here highlights how much these ghost signs are neglected. Not sure if it has any chance of being renovated - the Bile Beans example recently renovated ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-11-07) has generated a storm of protest in our local newspaper. Many people wanted it left as it was, but then it would simply vanish eventually. The John Smith's example is in good condition compared with some others I found!
Thank you Ladyjane - it has been interesting looking for these, and it is taking me to parts of York I don't often visit. It also makes me look up at buildings more!
Thank you Roslyn - these signs give an interesting glimpse of the past. I've found about 12 of these in York so far, though some are in such poor condition it's hard to tell what they say.

Thank you Pyrrhula - it's a shame to tax advertisements like this - the result would be that most ghost adverts would be lost.

Thank you Carol, glad you like it!

Thank you Mickey, I found another one yesterday which I need to go back and shoot. It's amazing how many there are around.
