286 - Founded in York by St Paulinus of York in the year AD 627, the school was originally based at York Minster. An early headmaster Alcuin (Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus), went on to be Chancellor to the Emperor Charlemagne, and founded several of the earliest schools in mainland Europe. It is the third oldest school in the UK and the fourth oldest in the world.
The school is a private boarding and day school with an 'outstanding' OFSTED report at it's last inspection. For most of it's life it was a boys only school, with the first girls not being admitted until 1976. It is now a mixed school at all age levels.
The school has expanded considerably in recent years, taking over the buildings of a nearby state school where pupil numbers had fallen sharply.
The shot was taken from a public footpath that runs through the school site. There used to be a second footpath which went through the arch below the tower near the centre of this shot, but that was closed in 2006 on safety grounds, despite strong local opposition.
