Creating an Ice Sculpture by if1

Creating an Ice Sculpture

288 - Here a sculptor is busy creating an Ice Sculpture for the Festival of Angels. This year the location of this display was in Kings Square, on a raised area which gave the large crowd the opportunity to see the sculptor at work.

During the course of the Festival, three displays of carving were held, and the finished sculptures added to the street displays already in the streets nearby.

Sadly the weather wasn't too cooperative this year, with temperatures not low enough to prevent melting, and little sun, which meant it wasn't possible to get the backlit shots of some previous years where the ice then glows. A crisp cold frosty sunny day is best for this event - perhaps next year....?
Clever aren't they? I remember seeing them when we lived in Canada - they lasted much longer there!

I always find these interesting. I have a neighbor who occasionally makes these ice sculptors in his garage for local events.

You really have to be confident of your ice carving skills with a crowd around you like that :)

This is so fascinating! It would never work here in South Africa... not even in mid winter... so it's a very foreign concept to me!

Great shot!

A nice collage, Ian. Shame about the weather - if the festival had been a week earlier, there wouldn't have been a problem!
