311 - I've recently included a couple of images of small buildings of historical interest on Clifton Green in York, but today it's a rather larger building close to the Green.
The church of St Philip and St James was built in 1866-7, and the architect was GF Jones of York. It was built at a time of rapid change in the area, when the former rural village was having many new houses built.
During 1982-3 the church interior was changed significantly, with pews replaced by chairs, the altar moved from the east end to the west, areas partitioned off to form meeting rooms, and new heating and lighting installed.
More recently the clock on the church tower was renovated, and I have photos in my archive of men abseiling down the tower from the bell loft to reinstall the arms of the clock.
This shot was actually taken yesterday, but I didn't want to waste such a beautiful blue sky!
How come that when you see clocks it's either 10 minute to two or like here almost 10 minutes past. It takes work to keep up these magnificent historical buildings..in this case this beautiful church.
I was just going to comment on your better weather ..... then I noticed you took this one yesterday! It's a very beautiful shot against that clear blue sky.
Thank you Vesna, we are very fortunate to have so many old buildings, but each country has it's own beauty, and I've really enjoyed your shots of flowers and insects!
So many marvelous churches around you. The blue sky sets off the color of the building. I like the shadows on the side of the church also. Nice history.
Thank you Dar. I took a very similar shot to this some years ago as a transparency, which also had a bright blue sky. It was printed onto mugs which were sold to help raise funds to update the interior of this church.
