310 - Following a flood event in York over Christmas, the third such event in four months, the clean up has again begun. Much of the city centre riverside has already been cleared, but the cycle path / footpath beside St Georges Field was in the process of being treated today. Here a powerful hose is being used to wash the mud away. The structure behind the workman is the approach to Skeldergate Bridge.
The clean up means that it is possible to use the riverside paths again, where they have a hard surface. Grass paths further out of town are still very muddy and unpleasant.
Great candid Ian, love how you captured every day life. Fantastic lighting and pov as well. So sorry about all the floods you're been having, I'm sure there is a lot of damage and clean up to do.
Thank you Judith - the clean up has gone quite quickly, and almost all the city centre is clear. I just hope it doesn't have to be repeated again this winter!
Thank you Therese. Most years we have some kind of flood but often it just covers the riverside paths and doesn't affect property. Occasionally there is a much larger flood which is why much of the city has flood defences. Last year was exceptional with at least 4 floods, including one severe one. Fortunately only 70-80 properties were affected, rather than the hundreds before the flood defences were built. All four floods were recorded in my project, in April, September, November, and the after effects of December here. They are all tagged 'floods' if you want to find them.
Thank you Molly - you're quite right, there are extensive flood defences in and around York, but there are a number of sensitive sites in the city centre which are unprotected. This means a relatively small number of properties are affected, but many hundreds which used to be affected are now protected.

Thank you Kd, there are several teams at work and water is pumped from the river to provide the water jets. Progress is fairly quick.
Thank you Christine - we've had quite a few dry days now and the river looks very sedate and harmless!
Thank you Hazel, glad you like it!

Thank you Ruth, glad you like it!
Thank you Stevie - I've had lots of practice with flood shots over the past year, this being the 4th set of floods!
Thank you Pyrrhula, the authorities here have had lots of practice in dealing with floods over the last 12 months!
Thank you Tony - I'm sure we would be more than happy for you to help yourself to some of our rain!
Thank you Tanja, the clean-up is well under way. Fortunately very few properties were affected this time, but the riverside walks all needed cleaning.

Thank you Janet - our first sunny day this year, and now back to gloom!
Thank you Ladyjane - they have had a lot of practice over the past year!
Thank you Brian, the clean up is well on the way to completion.
Thank you Lee - I was very fortunate to catch this with the nice sunlight on the workman and the bridge.
Thank you Bruni, they are well on the way to completing the clean up.
Thank you Cindy - but this clean-up has become far too common over the last year!
