358 - I'm not aware of much street art in the York area, but I regularly pass these examples close to the main road into the city centre from Clifton.
These two panels are part of a selection of six painted along a wall in an alley near Clifton Bingo Hall. All the panels show hands in various positions.
The panels have existed for several years, and are now looking a bit worn and battered, but I thought they made a colourful shot on another dull grey day.
I know nothing of the origin or the artist responsible for them, and it's rather a shame that they are hidden along an alley and therefore missed by many people who pass, but they do brighten up the alley.
Thank you all for your very kind comments! I've discovered a bit more information since posting this yesterday. The walls were rendered before the pictures were painted, and interestingly this is at least the third series of images at this location. The previous series showed a number of well known film stars and was painted by Keith Hopewell, a well known street artist from Bristol, in 2004. The series before that were dramatic abstracts. I don't know if this series does show sign language - are there any experts out there?
