One of the hardest things about keeping donkeys in our climate is keeping their weight down. They originate from the edge of deserts and so would normally thrive on dry scrubby vegetation.
Their main source of food here is barley straw, but in the winter that is supplemented with hay. At this time of year when the spring grass starts to grow the amount of hay I give them is drastically reduced.
Hay to a donkey is like sweeties to a child. I went into the hay store this evening to get some straw, but when I turned round I realised I had been followed....... you can see that they know they shouldn't really be in there can't you?
Ahhh! I thought it was fear of the goat that caused such an expression!
When you refer to hay store, are you saying where YOU store it or where you buy it? It is so fascinating to learn such things about various lifestyles around the globe!
OMG- the tallest one's expression looks just like Esme when she's been caught. Thanks so much for showing me how special an animal a donkey really is :-)
Wow - that facial expression is brilliant. My sisters mule has the same thieving tendencies... gotta keep a close eye on her as she can get through most gates etc...
What a trio! Reminds me of blackberry-picking out riding - I would pick the top ones, my pony would eat the middle ones and the dog got the low ones. There weren't many left by the time we had finished!!
Naughty funny donkeys and goat.
