may day by jantan

may day

today was our village's annual may day celebration. True to form, the weather was appalling - rain and cold.

This didn't stop the local school children parading through the village, crowning the may king and queen and showing off their maypole dancing skills.

They then went off to spend their pocket money at the cake stalls and sideshows that lined the street. My donkeys and goats played their part on the "guess the donkey's birthday" stall.
How wonderful to celebrate May day in the traditional way, I remember doing this as a child, cool shot, love the movement.

Great image. I missed the maypole dancing yesterday although it was so wet and the children were soaked so it might not have been a great image.

I like the angle you took this from and it's a great capture, you can really sense the movement and I agree with Mark above - it almost as if I'm there! I used to do this about twenty years ago but sadly I don't know anywhere locally that still does maypole dancing and I couldn't find any local may day festivals either.

You've captured the village and community feel of this well. I remember this at infant school - getting in a muddle at times but good fun!
